DESCRIPTION: APW - Hamilton, Grade 950, 23J, 16S, heavy 14K gold Dubois Watch Case Co OF original case with hidden hinges and bearing HWW marking for retailer Hayden W. Wheeler Co. of New York City, gold cuvette engraved "Presented to Arthur Reese. May 28th, 1911 by Members of B. of L.E. Div. No 652 for Valuable Services Rendered," case rear with corresponding fancy "A R" initials, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled barrel arbor, striped pattern nickel damascene, s#775967. Watch comes also with its original Hamilton hang tag bearing serial number correctly matched to the movement. Gross weight of assembled watch 71.6 dwt (111.5 g). An elegant and beautiful example of this top grade watch with a documented railroading provenance. Arthur Reese of Tamaqua, Pennsylvania worked from 1888 to 1933 for the Philadelphia and Reading Railway and during this 45-year employment held positions including brakeman, fireman, conductor and locomotive engineer. The present watch was given to Arthur Reese by his fellow Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers members in recognition for his services as a member of the brotherhood's "Grievance Committee," and the presentation of the watch is described in detail in the May 31st, 1911 issue of the Pottsville Republican newspaper. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, few typical micro-fine scratches, small speck of oxide to hub of smaller winding wheel; dial with edge chip mostly under bezel at setting lever area, outer chapter hl at 1:30, very faint outer chapter hl at 7:30, absolutely minuscule nick to upper rim of center hole; excellent hands, outer portion of minute with finish loss; case shows hardly any wear, micro-fine scratches to exterior, some fine scratches to cuvette from past slips when opening, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail; tight bow, crown shows very little wear; glass crystal with an edge chip at upper right; hang tag with marking fully intact, horizontal crease at its mid-point, mild crease at upper portion.
